Here I am Just after I lost my front bead on a rock formation.
I need to install that Tommy Lift someday.
Sorry for the fuzzy picture but it's a twinkie on the "Vertical Challenge" sign after we renamed it "Twinkie Highway".

LEBC Roundup 08

Well another roundup has come and gone and it was a blast. I took the bronco buggy and we ran all of the extreme trails. I had to be winched once when I got sideways on "Looney Tunes" late Friday evening. Ran the new trail "To He#$ and Back" Saturday and made it through it with only having to be spotted in the beginning. That trail is awesome. Here are some pics of it.

Before I even get started with my write up I want to thank Paul Cotey, Joel Wilson, Alex Brown, JT Tonne, Kirk Allen Jordan, Jason Rogers, Mr. Cotey(Paul”s Dad), Lee Novikoff, John Wright, Shain Chapman, Randy Kruse, & his son along with the others that I have failed to mention. You guys and gals have no idea what work goes on to pull something like that off. You get a standing ovation from me along with one for all those who went before you to create this awesome group like Andrew Hubert, Lee, Chris Towry, John Monroe, Jason Hall, and I’m sure countless others.

On with the write up. . .

Left Wednesday night heading to Katemcy stopping in Ft. Worth at my Aunt’s house. After getting up to a great breakfast I was off to Katemcy. I arrived in Katemcy around 2:00 but couldn’t find the park for about an hour. Got in and unloaded Fred and went to see what we needed to do with Joel. After helping with the registration bags and unloading the t-shirts (Forgot to give out a shout to Eugene Tsai & Alex Brown for the design & Craig Musgraves for printing them up!) the socializing started and didn’t end till 2:30ish am. Got up around 6ish to get things ready for registration, driver’s meeting, & wheeling. Now I was signed up as the officer to go with the 5 group with Lee N. leading. I have followed Lee before and should have known what we were in for. Our group consisted of Lee N. with Barbie, Chris T. & vendor passenger Suzy Duff with Barnie, Joe & Julie L. with Crunch, and Me & fellow bronco nut Jason H. with Fred. Now I’m still the rookie in this group and have Jason Hall riding with me who has gone numerous times with Lee and Chris and knows what to expect out of these rigs so I’m a little nervous. It didn’t fail that we got high centered on the road going up to the trail & I let my nerves get me and think something broke. The whole time Joe & Julie are right in front of us like 10-15’ into Looney Tunes with a broken spindle with all of the level 2 gang watching. Our group helps Joe booby fab his spindle back enough to get him back to the camp and run for some parts or should I say we had 6-8 supervisors/smart butts giving him a hard time. Anyway were off into Looney Tunes and everything is cool until we come to the infamous ledge that someone put on YouTube with Lee & Barbie. Lee just motors right up it and Chris tries for a while and finally finds a line. I on the other hand finally had to have a winch after losing my pride and pucker factor. We go on from there until I see Chis & Suzy almost flip over backwards. I am right behind them so I don’t want to make the same mistake. I’m up right up to the top and my rig won’t go any farther. I look at the front and rear driver’s side to see what is holding me up and then I feel it go a little and launch it up into what else but a tree. Guess I should look right in front of me next time. Well I’m happy no one has seen me do this so I hurry up to catch up with Chris when I see his rig going up on its side in a slow motion with John Monroe looking on. Next thing I see is Lee jumping up to try and catch the 4,000 lb rig with no avail. I then remember that Suzy was on the passenger side and was hoping she had gotten out. I was wrong but glad to see her & Chris safely slide out of the rig. We pulled him back upright and refilled the tranny fluid and had to wait a little while for Lee to run back to camp and get a little more. So John looks over at Fred and asks what happened. I had hoped I could get away with the tree incident but Fred had to open it’s big mouth and tell John about it. I say that because my grill opened up and looked like it wanted to bite someone. John therefore renamed it Freda because she looked like a woman who was a little po’ed. Lee shows back up and we get Barney going again and finish Looney Tunes with only a little winching for Lee.

Now that was around 3:30 when we got back and some of the other groups where there and after playing on the lower levels and wanting something a little more challenging John, Suzy, & I took them to Looney Tunes. I again get hung up on the same section of road that leads to Looney Tunes and everyone thinks that is the trail. We had to winch a couple over it. Little did they know that was just the road and the trail was just ahead. They all shook their heads and decided not to try something a “little” more challenging. We go back and everyone ramps the RTI ramp and gets some bragging rights or lack of for some right Joe. Paul C. shows us how to ramp and pulls some 1200 number. Want to thank Gretchen and BC Broncos for helping with the event. We go back and eat, clean up, & do some more socializing with some video thanks to Paul’s buds.

Saturday comes and we decide not to have a 5 level group but to have 2 level 4’s and I went with Lee’s led “Bronco Alley” group which had Lee, Doc Lewis & Adam from Bronco Driver, Paul Miller, Jeff T., Greg S., Michael S., & Chris T. Now Chris’s family showed up the night before so I gave Suzy Duff a ride this time. Lee takes off through the first section of Bronco Alley which is quite tuff especially for stock wheelbase broncos. Doc Lewis is next and after a little winching we got him up to the rock and into position. Now Chris & I have Tom from PSC at the bottom of the hill and we are into a pretty good discussion about hydraulic cylinders and such when the roar of all of the spectators or should I say shrill. We look up and see Doc no longer in a good position but rolling off of the big rock. I still don’t know what kept him from not landing on his roof. Everyone gets him back on all fours and we get through Bronco Alley almost until the last obstacle things go a little awry. I’m in another deep conversation with Suzy Duff about buying some radiators from them some time ago and such when we go done the last ledge. I had forgotten to put my seatbelt back on and luckily she had put hers on. My back end decided to flip us off of the rock and the only thing from keeping me from leaving my vehicle was the side bar and steering wheel. Right after that Michael’s steering box shaft decided to go so we had to leave his rig there for repair.

Got back and a few wanted to go back to “Bronco Alley” that wanted to see some hard core rigs in action. So John Monroe and I along with Lee N., Landis & Sally, Joe & Julie, & Michael Brown went with a host of others to watch. I went first followed by Joe in Crunch and we did the normal line. Michael was talked into or something into the other line. After a crunched fender or two he made it. Then Landis went the same way with a little intermission because of a bolt shearing. He did the same line as Michael but with a wheel stand. Needless to say the video that Jerry Hoover & wife did for me says it all. I have to get back to do the sand drags and leave them having fun. The sand drags are as fun as usual with the Kruses bringing out a local kid and his sand rail. This year Kirk and his “Buzzin Half Dozen” took the whole thing. Still has me shaking my head in disbelief. We leave there and have some fine BBQ and a great raffle.

Sunday morning everyone is a little late to rise except Michael S. and group have Lee take them back to their rig for the repair. We then go out as a group to “Klunatic” and have some fun. Our group of 5 or 6 turned into about 13 rigs and it took a little while needless to say. Joel Wilson lost a bead, Crawltech’s jeep broke a steering knuckle, & Joe and JT kept trying to outdo one another’s roll attempts. But just like the other days everyone left with a big smile on their face. We got back to camp and loaded up and went home dreaming of next year and what we need to do to our steeds.

Again I want to thank everyone who helped, vendors for sponsoring it, and especially to all those who attended and made it the event it was.Walter Cox
